There are many benefits associated with the recycling of Construction, Development and Excavation (CDE) waste material into recycled aggregates.

One of the most important and often overlooked contributions to the environment is the production of recycled aggregates.

The construction and operation of the built environment consumes 60% of all materials, results in 33% of all waste and accounts for 45% of CO2 eq emissions in the UK (WRAP – Resource Efficient Built Environment).

Camden Plant Ltd contributes to UK initiatives by accelerating the move to a sustainable resource-efficient economy, through recycling and re-use of CDE waste. The production of recycled aggregates and other products provides lower carbon materials for a range of construction and redevelopment projects across London and the South East.

Tackling the impacts associated with buildings and infrastructure - from design through in-use, to demolition – is critical for meeting UK government's 2050 greenhouse gas targets.

Using sustainable aggregates that meet the same specifications as virgin aggregates will generate substantial savings. Specific benefits include:

  • Reducing road haulage activities – and therefore reducing road congestion and increasing road safety

  • Reducing the amount of natural rock mined – which equates to less mining, less blasting, and the preservation of natural resources for future generations

  • Decreasing the energy used for processing – Turning reclaimed material back into usable aggregate requires less energy than processing virgin stone

  • Conserving the energy used for transportation – When you create recycled materials, in close proximity to construction and civil engineering sites, the carbon footprint and associated costs are dramatically reduced

  • Reducing pollution and CO2 produced at each step of the process -– Reduces overall pollution and CO2 emissions by being in close proximity to construction and infrastructure sites in London and the Home Counties

  • Reduces material sent to landfill
